How and why the War and Peace Ball was founded

The War and Peace Ball was founded by the parishioners of the London Russian Orthodox Parish of the Dormition of the Most Holy Mother of God in 1989 in order to raise funds to build a cathedral in the Russian Orthodox style on freehold territory.

Up until then the parish had worshipped in a series of rented church buildings. As lease after lease expired the parish was made to move on.

This time the parishioners decided to find a permanent home. In 1991 a piece of land with a substantial house was purchased in Chiswick, London.

In 1997 the foundation stone was laid by His Eminence The Most Reverend Archbishop Mark of Berlin, Germany and Great Britain and the cupola and cross were raised in 1999.

The cathedral consists of an upper and lower church in ancient 14th century Pskov style. The parish has a congregation of some 300 parishioners and their families. On Easter and other feast days the church will attract more than 600 worshippers.

The lower church was completed amd consecrated in May 2005. With funds in place for works on the interior of upper church in 2006, The War and Peace Ball considers its mission, to raise funds for the construction of the first purpose-built Russian Orthodox church in London, successfully completed.
